Getting Baby To Sleep In Crib | CloudMom

April is asking where in a crib she should place her baby. Watch for my two cents based on my experience!

Hello my friends. April P wrote in to ask: "Should newborns sleep in middle of crib or down low with feet near the edge of crib?" I've heard a lot of interesting questions since I began doing CloudMom. Many have concerned how to go about getting a baby to sleep in the crib, but I must say, this one had me stumped and got me thinking. I give my two cents in today's blog!

April, as I explain the the video, the standards for exactly how a baby sleeping in a crib should be situated have changed over time, and they've changed during the course of my five babies, the first of which was born in 2004. In 1992, the AAP started a campaign against SIDS which urged people to put their babies down on their backs. With my first child born 10 years ago, I was urged to alternate having him on his back and then on his sides to combat "flattened head syndrome." With subsequent babies, the doctor urged me to only place them on their backs.

How did you place your baby in the crib? Weigh in below!

But what about your question: in what area of the crib should a baby be situated? Well, I researched this and found one great article by the Cleveland Health Clinic that encourages parents to battle flattened head syndrome by switching the direction of the baby in the crib, moving mobiles around, and even moving the placement of the crib in a the baby's room, the theory being that infants will orient their head toward light and that doing this will encourage the baby to turn his or her head in different ways to combat flattened head syndrome.

I discuss this article and more about what I did in today's vlog.

Take a look and let me know what you guys did! And always remember, your baby's safety is paramount and you want to make sure there are never any obstructions to their breathing in the crib or elsewhere.

Putting babies to sleep is always a hot topic among new parents, mostly because we are so exhausted.

Meanwhile, as new parents we like to have our babies close-by to know that they are ok and for convenience when it comes to frequent feedings.

–Can a Newborn Sleep in a Crib?–

Absolutely! This was always my method. In this video, I set forth why I chose to put all my babies to sleep and nap in the crib from day one and explain why this worked for me.

If your taste changes over the years (and in case other babies are in store for you!), you can keep things interesting by choosing some funky crib sheets or new bedding! For more of my crib recommendations and how to make a crib transition (from a crib to a toddler bed), watch the rest of my video!

Hello my dear fellow parents!

If you're furnishing your nursery, you'll probably want to invest in a baby crib. And crib safety will definitely be your first priority. So, let’s talk about crib bumpers. Are crib bumpers safe? This video discusses these baby crib protectors and if your family should even worry about investing in them! Take a look for my views.

Are Crib Bumpers Necessary?

If you do decide that you like the look of your crib with the crib bumper, you’ll only be able to use the bumper for the first five months or so of your child’s life. Why? Well although bumpers protect your baby from bumping into the hard wood of the crib, likewise it is recommended bumpers be taken out of the crib as soon as your baby can move freely in the crib. Bumpers can actually become suffocation hazards for your baby once they are five months old, if even earlier if your baby is moving freely before that.

Whether or not to invest in a pretty bumper for a few months in a personal decision. For why I think you can do without the bumper, click through and watch my video. Thanks for watching this video on crib safety and safe sleep for babies, oh and check out these other videos on this topic!

Did you use crib bumpers with your babies and for how long? Please let me know in the comments below – I would love to hear from you!

Don't get caught up in trying to find a mobile that matches your nursery. Babies don't give a lick about decor. The right mobile is one that's safe and entertaining.

Step 1: Bright colors
Look for bold patterns and bright, contrasting colors. You may have heard that babies only like black and white

Step 2: Objects face downward
Make sure that the images or objects that hang from the mobile face downward, so your baby can see them.

Tip
Some mobiles revolve, play music, or perform other stunts. Be sure to check your baby's reaction to these features before settling on a mobile. And always avoid flashing lights

Step 3: Avoid sharp & breakable
Inspect the dangling objects themselves. Avoid anything with sharp edges or small parts that could break off and make their way into your baby

Step 4: Inspect strings
Inspect the length of the strings the objects dangle from

Step 5: Check connection
Examine how the mobile connects to the crib. Make sure the connection is secure and stable, with sturdy clamps or heavy-duty Velcro. Ideally, you should be able to swing the mobile out away from the crib when it's time for baby to sleep.

Tip
Once a baby can push up on her hands and knees, remove the mobile from her crib. She could reach it and pull it down.

Step 6: Attach to crib
Once you find a mobile that fits the bill, attach it to the crib and watch your baby

Did You Know?
By 3 to 4 months, a baby should be able to track a moving object
